Simple Ayurvedic Habits That Make Me Feel Like a Goddess
Unlocked Post! These simple practices can have a profound impact on your overall wellness.
In this free post, I will share with you three ways I help myself feel like a radiant goddess even on my bad days.
First, a quick Ayurveda 101!
I’m so fascinated with the Earth and the elements. It’s all so darned perfect when you take the time to dive into the depths of it all. How did we get here? How did that come about? Why are things the way they are?
This is Ayurveda — the science of life.
It started with Kundalini Yoga. I wanted to understand the energetics of my body and how energy flows. So, I studied with a well-known guru in the space — Guru Singh. Bless him, he is such a joy. Alongside him was also Brett Larkin — an inspiration in the world of Yoga. I am fortunate to have learned from and studied alongside some super wise and amazing souls.
My study of Kundalini yoga took me deeper. Soon, I found myself curious about the elemental makeup of life. This is what pulled me closer to Ayurveda.
Ayurvedic medicine is rooted in the belief that nature is medicine. What is happening externally impacts us internally. And so, Ayurveda is a holistic practice that encompasses body, mind, and soul.
Ayurveda understands that the earth is comprised of 5 elements. Those elements are Earth, Fire, Water, Air, Ether.
Ether is the element that holds it all together and also holds nothing at all.
It is the uncontainable, ever-expanding space that contains all life.
Looking at the qualities of these elements within nature and within our bodies, we can take action to support an excess or a depletion of these elements.
A simple example would be: When we’re hot, we try to cool ourselves. Or when we’re dry, we hydrate.
When we understand our body’s primary elemental make-up (our constitution, or prakruti), then we can take it even deeper and make proactive choices to support our constitution. Essentially, we want to prevent these elemental qualities from becoming excess.
When there is an excess of these elements, symptoms begin to show. According to Ayurveda, this is the manifestation of disease — or better, dis-ease.
There are some Ayurvedic practices that support all constitutions and have profound benefits when practiced daily.
Ayurveda is super complex and I could never write about it all in one post. In fact, I could never write about it ALL, ever, because it’s a continuous living science.
As we evolve, so does the science of life.
3 Daily Practices to Support Overall Wellness
These practices are simple enough that you can begin them today. Notice how simple they are, but how easy it can be to forget to honor the miraculous processes of our body systems. Our bodies work hard all day and all night to keep us alive and thriving.
Our modern way of life is not designed to support our natural state. So it’s important to take actions that support the natural balance of our body.
1. Scrape Your Tongue When You Wake Up
This simple routine is so easy to do and yet it has amazing benefits. Did you know that when you sleep, your liver works the hardest? That’s the real reason why it is not recommended to eat before you go to bed. Your liver has enough work to do and by eating before bed, you're making your body work twice as hard with extra digesting and extra toxin processing and detoxing to do.
Anyway, back to the tongue! So when you sleep, your liver is detoxing your body. Everything you take in throughout the day, not just food, but also information and emotions has to be processed. And guess where a lot of that goes?
You guessed it!
When you scrape the tongue, you are removing all that gunk your super smart liver decided you don’t need. You spit it into the sink and say goodbye to it forever, instead of swallowing it and having it go through the process again.
Not only that, but it helps your mouth stay clean, your breath stay fresh and even enhances the function of your tastebuds. So your food will even taste better. This actually promotes healthier eating habits and food choices over time.
2. Drink Warm or Hot Lemon Water BEFORE Coffee and Food
I still love my coffee, and I do drink it. I am just more mindful and intentional when I choose to drink it. But warm lemon water must come first, and here’s why:
The warm/hot quality wakes up the digestive system. Since it slows down at nighttime, you want to kickstart it in the morning and hopefully boost your metabolism. By doing this simple practice on an empty stomach in the morning, you can make significant progress in your weight loss and elimination.
I had one client who started doing just this simple practice and within a week she had noticed a massive increase in energy levels and a decrease in weight — 2 kilos in fact, within only one week.
Also, the lemon helps to flush the lymph, get things moving, and purify the blood.
3. Oil Your Body
In Sanskrit, the word Snehana means “to love” and we also use it as a term for oleation. Because what is oil? Oil is the essence of something when it’s been stripped of all the excess and is in its purest form.
So we love our bodies. We wrap it and hug it in the warm embrace of oil. The point of practicing Ayurveda is to stay youthful and juicy and enhance longevity. When things get old, what happens? It usually dries out, shrivels up, and stops moving like it used to.
When a machine starts sounding funny, it needs oil. We oil it so that it can function properly and avoid wear and tear. Do the same to your body.
The simple act of slathering oil on your body as a daily practice will not only oil you inside and out, but you will notice over time that you’ve developed a stronger, more loving relationship with your body.
We call this act Abhyanga. Abhyanga soothes our frantic minds, calms the nervous system, grounds us, keeps us young, and deepens our connection with ourselves.
You can choose from various oils and pick the ones that pacify your constitution. For example, if you typically run on the hotter side and experience emotions like jealousy and anger often, you may want to opt for an oil with more cooling qualities like coconut. If you usually have cold extremities and feel overwhelmed and overstimulated, opt for a warmer oil like sesame.
I also like to increase my oil intake when I notice I am feeling ungrounded and overwhelmed, or if my metabolism feels slow. Oiling internally helps soothe the nervous system and adds a heavy quality to that spacey, ungrounded, and anxious tendency we might have. It also helps loosen up toxic sludge and move it out of the body. Plus, it keeps your insides soft and juicy!
If you’re feeling a little ‘dried out’, try being more intentional about adding healthy oils and fats to your diet.
