Fall is my favorite time of the year. I love the cooler weather and I enjoy wrapping myself up in a blanket with a hot cup of tea.
If you’re like me, by the time fall rolls around you’re likely craving some routine and structure after a full summer filled with adventure, road-tripping, traveling and maybe some spontaneity.
Our bodies are naturally inclined to tune into the season, and what the season is asking us for.
The Elemental Nature of Fall
Fall brings with it cooler weather, wind, and typically dryer air. This season is associated with the vata element - air and ether. It functions as movement and energy.
This time of year brings with it a sense of movement, spaciness, dryness, airy, and cooling qualities. Take a look at nature and see what you notice. Leaves begin to dry up, become brittle and fall. With the rise of vata (rise of fall), we will begin to notice these qualities within our inner climate as well.
Vata craves warmth. It’s why as soon as you notice the leaves begin to fall and the wind begin to blow, you want to throw on a sweater and make a cup of hot cocoa.
How Our Bodies Change With the Seasons
The more erratic nature of fall can show up in our bodies and minds.
You may notice that fall exaggerates tendencies or issues. For example, if you have arthritis, which is a vata-related condition (air in the joints, cracking joints), you may notice that your arthritis is aggravated more in the cooler weather.
If you have dry skin, or even if you don’t typically have dry skin, you may notice that your skin needs more moisture and nourishment.
Vata can cause digestive disturbances such as gas and constipation.
The air and space elements also affect us on an emotional and mental level. When Vata gets into the mind, we can feel scattered, ungrounded, anxious, nervous, agitated, and irritable. Our sleep may also be affected. Think of air getting into the nervous system.
Flow With the Seasons
The best way to balance is to introduce opposing qualities so that we don’t aggravate the excess elements in and around us. This is why it’s so important to be mindful of the qualities of the season and make choices that keep us balanced and in alignment.
Many of us already practice this intuitively. You might crave a warm bowl of hearty stew loaded with root veggies and meat (these ingredients are heavy and grounding, which are the opposite qualities of Vata.)
Since we might feel more ungrounded during the fall months, we will want to focus on supportive fall routines and practices that can soothe and stabilize.
