We Are Made of the Elements
Nature provides us with so much information. If you take a moment to step outside and watch how the plants and the animals are aligned with it, you feel a sense of peace, don’t you?
That’s because the more aligned we become with the natural rhythms of nature, the more in balance we feel.
Instead of pushing so hard against what nature intended, understanding how nature is moving us can provide valuable insights into our health and well-being.
This is Ayurveda. A profound and ancient science that, if implemented in our daily, modern living, heals, empowers, reverses disease, and fulfills us.
Disease, according to this science means this: DIS-EASE. Something is not jiving, and we are not supporting it, creating an imbalance. Therefore, our body systems are not at ease.
The Dosha’s
The doshas in Ayurveda are the elemental and energetic constitutions of our body systems. The best way to explain the dosha is how our body expresses itself.
We determine a person’s dosha in order to understand the body type, diet and lifestyle recommendations, disease prevention, diagnosis, and treatment.
There are 3 main doshas and some people will present more of one than the other, some might present two and some may present 3. Balancing each dosha is key.
Pitta = Fire and Water
Vata = Air and Space
Kapha = Earth and Water
The Doshas in Relation to Our Body
🔥 PITTA
Have you ever been called firey, like me? Do you experience intense outbursts of anger? When you have negative emotions, do you typically learn toward jealousy, competition, control and rage? These are HOT emotions. Fire.
How about your digestion? Is it fast? Do you need to eat often to avoid feeling hypoglycemic? Do you get hangry? What is your elimination pattern like? Is it loose and frequent? Do you get heartburn often? Again, these are all qualities that suggest there is excess HEAT in the body. Think transformative, hot, sharp, strong, oily.
Is your skin usually rosy and flushed? Do you have hot hands and feet?
Any type of inflammation in the body is a sign that excess pitta (heat) is present.
🌬VATA
Do you sometimes feel flighty or spaced out? Are you super creative, but have a difficult time bringing your creations to fruition because it’s hard to stay focused on the tasks at hand? Do you feel anxiety and overwhelm often? These are AIRY emotions. Air and Space.
Most of us present a vata imbalance because the way society is structured. The internet (think ether), is vata. It’s information that we are receiving at lightning speed. Without limiting the time we spend on the internet, we are developing an excess of vata without even being aware of it.
Do you usually have cold hands and feet? Do you like being warmer rather than cold? Is your skin typically on the dryer side?
🌲 KAPHA
Do you wear your heart on your sleeve? Are you always giving? Do you love to help others, but sometimes it wears on you? Are you a natural nurturer, slower moving, forgiving and compassionate?
Is your body structure more heavier set or broad? Do you gain weight easily and is it difficult to lose weight?
How about your emotions? Do you lean toward depression and lethargy? Do you attach to things and have a difficult time letting go? Do you avoid conflict at all costs?
Are your hands cool and clammy? Can you sleep for hours?
These are all signs that Kapha is present in the body. Kapha is earth. Think earthy, stable, heavy, cool, moist qualities.
What Qualities Are Presenting For You?
Notice what qualities are presenting for you. What symptoms do you find yourself needing to manage often?
A good way to begin working with the body is to offer the OPPOSITE qualities. We sometimes do this naturally, but when we understand that symptoms only present themselves once DIS-EASE has already manifested, then we can be more proactive in aligning with our personal nature and introducing opposite qualities on a daily basis to PREVENT DIS-EASE.
For example:
If you are a PITTA person, you typically run more on the hot side. And here’s a hint - typically a dosha, when imbalanced, will crave MORE OF ITSELF.
So that craving for hot and spicy jalapeno poppers might not be the best choice for you today, even though you want it. Instead, munch on a cool cucumber with hummus, and pour yourself a glass of Aloe Vera juice.
Consider Your Environment
Remember to assess the qualities in the environment around you. Do you live in a hot and dry climate? This means there are pitta and vata present in your environment. Take action to balance these qualities.
Do you live in a cold, rainy environment? How can you add more dry, warm qualities to your body and mind?
What about your home and the area where you work? Does it mirror back your qualities? A vata person would tend to have much more disorganization in their home. A pitta person would not be able to stand anything being out of place.

Also, take note of the seasons and the changing seasons - remember to be ready to support your dosha as the seasons change too!
